More information about aikido

If you would like more information about aikido, please see the links section. From there you can get to just about anything about aikido that exists online. If you have a specific question, please ask.

What is a typical class like?

Class starts with a formal seated bow to O'Sensei, then to the class instructor. Warm up will follow, consisting of various kinds of stretches, rolls and fundamental footwork. After warm up, class will formally begin and the instructor will demonstrate various locks, pins, throws and other aikido techniques, sometimes with weapons like bokken, jo and tanto.

In aikido you work with a partner to practice the various techniques in a non-competitive manner. There is no "sparring" in the traditional sense. Most of the techniques build upon techniques done earlier in the night, but there is enough variation so that if you are having particular trouble with one technique, you will probably get a chance to move to something else for the evening.

Class will end when the instructor gives a final clap and calls for formal lineup. At that time, students will take a moment to straighten their uniforms then line up in a seated kneel in rank order. Students will then again bow to O'Sensei, to the instructor who led the class, and then they will gather in a circle and bow to one another.

Who are the instructors?

Class instruction is shared by Motier Haskins (Shidoin, Certified Chief Instructor, 5th Dan) and Jackson Jarvis (2nd Dan). Other senior students also assist with instruction.

How much does Fairfield Aikikai cost?

Membership dues are $35.00 per month, $25.00 per month for students. There is an annual USAF membership fee for those who have tested and been awarded rank. Prior to this, USAF dues are optional.
